It is the fifth novel by Nobel Prize-winning British author Kazuo Ishiguro, published in 2000. The detective novel is about an Englishman named Christopher Banks. His early childhood was lived in the Shanghai International Settlement in China in the early 1900s, until his father, an opium businessman, and his mother disappear within a few weeks of each other when the boy is about ten years old.
